  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • For caramel: 9 tbsp unsalted butter, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1 cup heavy cream
  • For frosting: 8 oz cream cheese, 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your cake pans.
  2. Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden brown, then set aside to cool.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  4. In another bowl, mix browned butter with granulated and brown sugars until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla and buttermilk.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for approximately 36 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare caramel sauce by melting butter with brown sugar; whisk in heavy cream until smooth.
  8. For frosting, beat cold cream cheese until smooth then gradually mix in powdered sugar.
  9. Once the cakes are cooled, layer with caramel sauce and frost with cream cheese frosting.
