Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions is the ultimate weeknight meal that brings the bold flavors of a classic takeout dish right to your kitchen. This quick and easy recipe features tender beef strips stir-fried to perfection with sweet, caramelized onions and a savory sauce that clings to every bite.

  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for marinade and stir-fry)
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil for the marinade. Add beef strips and marinate for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté sliced onions until soft and caramelized; season with salt and pepper.
  3. Increase heat to high and add 2 tbsp of vegetable oil. Stir-fry marinated beef strips for about 2-3 minutes until browned.
  4. In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch until smooth. Pour over beef in the skillet and simmer until thickened.
  5. Return sautéed onions to the pan; combine well before serving hot over rice or noodles.
